Apple CarPlay Gets Highest Customer Satisfaction Score for In-Vehicle Infotainment [Report]

Apple CarPlay has the highest customer satisfaction score for in-vehicle infotainment systems, according to a new J.D. Power report. Infotainment is one of those lowest scoring categories for the automotive industry, but it is up slightly from last year.

Notably, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay outperform the experience provided by car manufacturers themselves.

Despite satisfaction improving 5 points this year to 823, infotainment remains one of the lowest-scoring categories industry wide. While satisfaction with in-vehicle infotainment systems averages 805, it is higher among owners who use Android Auto (832) or Apple CarPlay (840). This shows that customers prefer to have the simplistic usability of their phone extended into their vehicle more so than what manufacturers are providing.

The report also notes that owners are now switching between a greater variety of vehicle entertainment sources; however, 25% of owners say switching between sources contributes to a poor audio experience and 23% say difficult menu structure is to blame.

"Automakers keep pouring additional features into their vehicle infotainment systems, but it appears to be creating needless complexity," says Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power. "Owners struggle to perform simple audio-related tasks, so it begs the question whether automakers are actually in tune with the desires and needs of their customers."

Note* If you have vehicle that supports wired Apple CarPlay, but does not have wireless, you can get an adapter to enable wireless CarPlay. This makes it easier to use the Apple CarPlay interface without having to take your phone out of your pocket and physically connect it to your vehicle. The Carlinkit 5.0 is on sale today for $30 off (make sure to clip coupon) and it works with 2015 - 2024 vehicles.
