Apple has decided to delay the launch of its artificial intelligence features, missing the initial release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The delay will give the company more time to make improvements and fix bugs before the features arrive to consumers.
The company is planning to begin rolling out Apple Intelligence to customers as part of software updates coming by October, according to people with knowledge of the matter. That means the AI features will arrive a few weeks after the initial iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 releases planned for September, said the people, who declined to be identified discussing unannounced release details.
Apple will purportedly release iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas as early as this week, giving developers the ability to test Apple Intelligence features for the first time. This is unusual as Apple typically doesn't release the beta version of a software update until the previous version is publicly available.
The move to introduce Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 was purportedly made over concerns about stability.
In order to ensure a smooth consumer release of its big bet on AI, Apple needs support from developers to help iron out issues and test features on a wider scale. Concerns over the stability of Apple Intelligence features, in part, led the company to split the features from the initial launch of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.
Notably, even the launch of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 will be missing some features, including significant changes to Siri. Those improvements could come later in the year or in early 2025.
