Apple iPhone 17 Will Not Feature First 2nm Chip [Report]

The Apple iPhone 17 will not feature the first 2nm chip manufactured by TSMC, according to user 'Smartphone Chip Expert' on Weibo. The user has made accurate predictions about Apple's chip plans in the past.

Commenting on recent reports suggesting that TSMC is ahead of schedule with its new 2nm process, Smartphone Chip Expert dismissed these claims as fake news.

This is also nonsense fake news. The mass production of 2nm technology won't happen until the end of 2025, so the iPhone 17 definitely won't be able to use it. The iPhone 17's processor will still use 3nm technology. We'll have to wait until the iPhone 18 to see 2nm technology.

Anyone who has seen the production capacity planning chart will know that this is yet another irresponsible media report.

TSMC's 2nm process will introduce a new Nanosheet transistor structure, expected to enhance performance and power efficiency by a generation to meet the increasing demand for AI chips from customers. The company has also developed a backside power rail solution for 2nm. This innovation is expected to increase speed by 10% to 12% and logic density by 10% to 15%.

Code references found in Apple's backend reveal that the company is working on five new iPhone models that will likely use the same A18 chip. That chip will use TSMC's 3nm process.
