Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is set to begin trial production of its 2nm process next week, according to a new report from Liberty Times. Trial production is ahead of schedule. Initially, it was expected to begin in the fourth quarter.

Since the installation began in the second quarter at the first 2nm factory in Baoshan, Hsinchu Science Park, progress has been smooth thanks to the full cooperation of equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Trial production is expected to start next week, ahead of the market's fourth-quarter predictions, raising questions about whether mass production scheduled for next year will also be moved forward. To meet the AI order demand, a second factory is under rapid construction, and the 2nm factory in Kaohsiung is also being built intensively.

TSMC's 2nm process will introduce a new Nanosheet transistor structure, expected to enhance performance and power efficiency by a generation to meet the increasing demand for AI chips from customers. The company has also developed a backside power rail solution for 2nm. This innovation is expected to increase speed by 10% to 12% and logic density by 10% to 15%.

Apple is expected to be TSMC's first customer to get access to 2nm production. It will likely use 2nm for the 'A19' chip that will power the 2025 iPhone lineup.
