If you've been waiting for an update to the Mac Pro or Mac Studio, you may have to wait until late next year, according to a new report from Mark Gurman.
In a newsletter to subscribers today, Gurman predicts that all Macs will get an M4 update, but it will take some time before the chip makes it to every model.
There's been speculation online about when to expect the M4 Mac line, which I first discussed months ago. After checking around, I don't see a change in schedule. The M4 iMacs, MacBook Pros (low- and high-end versions) and Mac minis (low- and high-end models as well) are due between the end of 2024 and early 2025. New MacBook Airs are coming in the spring of 2025, and the Mac Pro and Mac Studio models will arrive around the second half of next year. This will mark the first time Apple is bringing a new chip family to every Mac it makes. The move follows the addition of the M4 to the iPad Pro in May.
The current M4 SoC consists of 28 billion transistors built using a second-generation 3-nanometer technology. It has a new 10-core CPU consisting of up to four performance cores and six efficiency cores, an enhanced GPU that provides Dynamic Caching, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and mesh shading, as well as, a Neural Engine capable of 38 trillion operations per second. Apple says the M4 can deliver the same performance as M2 with half the power consumption.
For now the only devices with an M4 chip are the new iPad Pro models:
● Apple iPad Pro 11-Inch
● Apple iPad Pro 13-Inch
