Apple has announced that businesses across Japan can now accept in-person contactless payments through Tap to Pay on iPhone.
Businesses can start using Tap to Pay on iPhone with compatible iOS apps. Customers can simply tap their contactless credit or debit card, iPhone, Apple Watch, or other digital wallets on the merchant's iPhone to complete a payment using NFC technology.
Starting today, GMO Financial Gate's stera tap app, Recruit Co., Ltd.'s AirPay Touch app, and Square's Square POS app are the first to offer Tap to Pay on iPhone to businesses in Japan. Additionally, Adyen will support it in the coming months, and it will also be available in Apple Stores in Japan. Tap to Pay on iPhone supports contactless credit and debit cards from major payment networks including American Express, JCB, Mastercard, and Visa.
"In a country where innovation meets tradition, Japan is rapidly transitioning from cash to electronic payments. We're thrilled to provide millions of businesses with Tap to Pay on iPhone, allowing nearly all iPhones to function as payment terminals without additional hardware, reducing costs for businesses and offering customers a simple, secure, and private contactless payment experience," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
Tap to Pay on iPhone is available now via software development kits (SDKs) provided by participating payment platforms and their app developer partners. For more details, visit the Apple Developer website.
