For now, it's just an iPad. The best iPad ever, I think — maybe even the best iPad you could reasonably ask for. But the story of the iPad — the "magic pane of glass," as Apple is so fond of calling it — is actually all about software. The iPad's software has let its hardware down for years. Apple has led us to believe that's about to change, that this year's WWDC will be the great turning point for AI and iPads and everything. We'll see. Until then, the iPad Pro is almost too good for its own good.

Apple has three computer varieties in its product lineup now: Macs, iPads and the Vision Pro. I haven't forgotten about the Vision Pro, Apple's three-month-old vision of head-worn future computing, because it stands a step ahead of the iPad now on that future-concept timeline. The iPad is a computer for tons of people now, my mom and kids included. It's great. The iPad Pro, however, won't be great for everyone until it's more affordable -- or it's also a Mac.

The design and power make me love the iPad Pro more than perhaps any other Apple product I own. This one's even better. This is all good stuff. Unfortunately, I have to end this review the same way I've ended almost every iPad Pro review I've written: I wish iPadOS loved the iPad Pro as much as I do. We continue to live in a world where Apple's most flexible, powerful, groundbreaking piece of hardware is let down by an inflexible, weak, and slow-to-be-upgraded operating system. "Unfortunately, the hardware has outpaced the maturity of the operating system and app ecosystem" is a thing I wrote nearly nine years ago, and while everything has evolved since then, it's still true.

As much as I've enjoyed using the iPad Pro these past several days, my hard-earned money seems far better invested in a MacBook Air. I write for a living, and I still much prefer doing so on a machine specifically built for it. And as much as Apple has continued building out iPadOS, I'll still go with MacOS for work 10 times out of 10.

But when I think realistically about what I need and what I can reasonably justify spending, I realize that the iPad Pro is just too much for me. Too expensive, too powerful, maybe a little too large (I truly love the 11-inch model, however). If you're in the same boat, then fortunately, there's an iPad that offers nearly everything the iPad Pro does for significantly less cash. The iPad Air may not be nearly as exciting as the Pro, but it offers the same core experience for a lot less cash. But if you aren't put off by the price, the new iPad Pro is sure to delight.
