Apple is in the process of sourcing OLED displays for its next generation iPhone SE 4, according to a new report from The Elec.
Sources tell the site that Samsung, BOE, and Tianma have submitted proposed pricing for the OLED display to Apple. Previous generations of the iPhone SE used LCD panels; however, Apple is said to be upgrading the device to a legacy OLED panel for the fourth generation.
Samsung Display proposed a unit price of US$30; BOE offered US$35 and Tianma US$40. Apple is countering with US$20 and their negotiation is still ongoing. The OLED panel prices are considerably lower than those of iPhone 15 as OLED panels for SE will use recycled parts and legacy techs.
It's believed that the OLED panel for the iPhone SE 4 will be the same as the one used for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13. This means that no additional investment will need to be made to develop the displays and yield rates will already be sufficient.
Samsung is most likely to land orders for the new panel, because in addition to the lowest proposed cost, it also has iPhone 14 OLED inventory that it could use to respond to demand changes, putting it at an advantage over rivals.
Previous reports have claimed the iPhone SE 4 will have a 6.1-inch display and use Apple's first in-house 5G modem. Additionally, a rumor from earlier this month, claimed the next gen iPhone SE would feature Dynamic Island.
