Amazon has confirmed that following the introduction of ads to its standard Prime Video subscription, it has also dropped support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Current subscribers will need to pay an additional $2.99/month to access the video streaming service ad-free and get back the features.
The change was spotted by 4KFilme, which noticed that smart TVs from Sony, LG, and Samsung were displaying content in HDR10 with Dolby Digital 5.1 following the introduction of ads to Prime Video.
Amazon spokesperson Katie Barker confirmed to The Verge that it's a deliberate move...
"Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities are only available on the ad free option, on relevant titles."
If you have a TV that supports Vision and Atmos and want to continue enjoying those features, you'll now need to pay $11.98/month to access just Prime Video or $17.98/month with a full Amazon Prime subscription.
