The iOS 17.4 beta released today includes references to a new Apple Pencil 3 with support for Find My, reports 9to5Mac.
Based on the internal files of iOS 17.4 seen by 9to5Mac, Apple has built a new Apple Pencil 3 that works with the Find My app. This should allow users to easily find their lost Apple Pencil, similar to what you can do with AirPods and AirTags.
The site says it's unclear if the new Apple Pencil will have Ultra Wideband technology for precise locating, or whether it will simply show the device's last location on a map.
Notably, Apple has also seeded a new version of the PencilKit API in iPadOS 17.4 beta. It's not revealed what's new in the update, but perhaps it adds additional functionality for the next generation pencil.
Currently, Apple sells three different Apple Pencils. The Apple Pencil (1st gen), Apple Pencil (2nd gen), and the Apple Pencil (USB-C). The most recent model is the Apple Pencil (USB-C); however, it lacks the pressure sensitivity, wireless pairing and charging, and double tap features of the Apple Pencil 2.
● Apple Pencil 1 - $89 ($10 off)
● Apple Pencil 2 - $115 ($14 off)
● Apple Pencil (USB-C) - $79
Apple is expected to debut new iPad Pro and iPad Air models this spring, so it's possible we could see the Apple Pencil 3 arrive alongside these devices. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more updates.
