Apple is planning to announce various new AI features at its Worldwide Developers Conference in in June, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Apple has been slow to introduce any significant AI advancements, falling behind key competitors such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Samsung, who have made substantial advancements in the field. However, Gurman says the company has been working on a large language model, internally dubbed 'Ajax', which will be used to power new features for customers, developers, and employees.
Apple is eyeing adding features like auto-summarizing and auto-complete to its core apps and productivity software such as Pages and Keynote. It also is working to merge AI into services like Apple Music, where the company wants to use the technology to better automate playlist creation. And Apple is planning a big overhaul to its digital assistant, Siri. For developers, Apple is working on a new version of Xcode and other development tools that build in AI for code completion. And the company is building a new AI-based system to help AppleCare employees assist customers with troubleshooting.
It will likely take until 2025 for Apple to fully scale its AI vision, an opportunity that competitors like Samsung will try to take advantage of. The new Galaxy s24 is set to be unveiled on January 24, 2024 and the company is already teasing powerful 'Galaxy AI' features with the message, "Trailblaze the new era of Galaxy AI. Unleash new levels of creativity, productivity and possibility – starting with your smartphone."
