Apple has multiple prototypes in testing for its next generation iPhone 16, according to a new report from MacRumors.
The site has obtained information on several design changes under consideration, including modifications to the camera bump and volume buttons, as well as, a new capture button.
The iPhone rendered in yellow features the earliest known button design with an Action Button, unified volume button, and iPhone X-style camera bump. The iPhone in pink has an Action Button and separate mechanical volume buttons, while the iPhone in midnight has the larger Action button and new Capture button. The iPhone rendered in black is the design we are expecting at this point.
For the rear cameras, Apple is allegedly moving to vertically aligned cameras, possibly to support spatial video. There are two designs being considered. One is an iPhone 12-style design with two camera lenses located one above the other. The other is an iPhone X-style design with a singular pill-shaped enclosure.
All designs being tested purportedly have an Action button; however, some prototypes have a larger Action button. The larger button is said to have been created as part of Project Atlas in an effort to change the button from mechanical to capacitive.
As previously reported, Apple is testing a new Capture button, developed under the codename Project Nova. The button will apparently feature a force sensor and "tact-switching" functionality, though the site is not sure what that entails. The button is allegedly in the same position as the mmWave cutout on U.S. iPhone models, so the mmWave antenna has been moved to the left side of the device.
So far no changes to the front of the iPhone 16 have been noted. Hit the link for additional details and please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more iPhone 16 updates.
