Apple Appears to Have Blocked 'Beeper Mini' App That Brought iMessage to Android

Apple appears to have blocked the new 'Beeper Mini' app that brought iMessage to Android users. Beeper Mini implemented Apple's end-to-end encryption protocol natively within the Android app itself and was gaining popularity after launching this week.

Reddit users began to report issues a few hours ago. @NoHeroicsNZ writes...

I've been using the app without issues since it launched, but this morning I'm unable to send/receive messages via either WiFi or Cellular Data and I'm getting an error back saying "failed to lookup on server: lookup request timed out".

Initially, the response indicated the problem might be on the Beeper Mini side...

"Dealing with an outage on the Beeper Mini side. Aware of it and already working on getting it fixed—thanks!"

However, Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky has now indicated to TechCrunch that it appears Apple has found a way to cut them off.

Asked if possibly Apple found a way to cut off Beeper Mini's ability to function, he replied, "Yes, all data indicates that."

At this time, it's unclear if Beeper will find a way to get back online. In the meanwhile, to get messages from iPhone users, Beeper Mini users may need to deregister their number. Apple provides a form to do that here.
