Apple has filed a legal challenge to the EU's Digital Markets Act ahead of its March 2024 deadline to comply.
The Court of Justice of the European Union announced Apple's filing today, as well as, legal challenges filed by TikTok and Meta.
@Apple (Cases T-1079/23 & T-1080/23), #Bytedance (#TikTok) (T-1077/23) and #Meta (T-1078/23) have filed cases contesting decisions taken by the @EU_Commission under the #DigitalMarketsAct #DMA #Competition.
Back in September, the EU named six companies that are designated as gatekeepers under its Digital Markets Act (DMA). These companies had six months to comply with the full list of do's and don'ts under the DMA for each designated service. For the App Store, this means Apple will be required to allow sideloading of apps, third party app stores, outside payment services, and more.
Notably, the DMA also includes an interoperability obligation for gatekeepers providing messenger services. It's likely this is why Apple has announced that it will introduce support for the RCS standard next year.
