Apple is planning to introduce a redesigned TV app that consolidates its iTunes Movies app and iTunes TV Shows app, according to a Bloomberg report. Sources tell the site that the new app will be released around December.
As part of the overhaul, the company will discontinue its dedicated apps on the Apple TV set-top box that let users rent and buy movies and shows. It will also remove the movie and TV show sections from the iTunes Store app on iPhones and iPads. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the move.
Since the TV app already lets users rent and buy programs, the separate iTunes apps are unnecessary. The TV app also lets users subscribe to third party video services and Apple TV+.
To make the TV app easier to navigate, Apple will reportedly introduce a new panel on the left side of the screen for navigation.
The revamped app on the Apple TV box will include a new side panel on the left-hand side for navigating between video categories, matching a design aesthetic used by Netflix Inc. and other streaming services. In addition to running on Apple's set-top box, the app is available on smart TVs produced by other companies.
Notably, Apple has already started the process of consolidating apps into the TV app. Back in August, it killed the iTunes Movies Trailers app and moved some of its content into the TV app.
