Samsung has received mass production approval for all four iPhone 15 display panels and has started shipping them as of August 1st, according to a new report from The Elec. LG has received conditional approval for the iPhone 15 Pro but has yet to secure approval for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. BOE not received received approval yet for the iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Plus and purportedly has handed over initial orders to Samsung.
Due to production disruptions by competitors, Samsung Display is expected to increase iPhone OLED shipments this year as well. After BOE handed over all of the iPhone 15 OLED initial shipments to Samsung Display, it is highly likely to miss the rest of the shipments by the end of this year. Apple applies the'Dynamic Island' function, which was only applied to the pro lineup in the iPhone 14 series last year, to the lower lineup in the iPhone 15 series this year. BOE is having difficulties in machining the hole display required to implement the dynamic island.
Although LG Display has only received conditional approval for the iPhone 15 Pro, its loses on orders for the iPhone 15 Pro Max may be limited. The production yield for image sensors supplied by Sony, as well as actuators for folded zooms supplied by LG Innotek are falling below expectations. This could delay some production into the following quarter by which time LG Display could have received approval for the larger model.
Notably, since the iPhone Pro model has accounted for 50-60% of sales over the past 2-3 years, Apple is expected to prioritize making that model rather than the Pro Max model. LG will likely try to increase early production for the iPhone 15 Pro while working towards approval for the Pro Max model. If LG's production disruption is longer than expected, this will undoubtably benefit Samsung. Last year, LG's setbacks resulted in Samsung getting orders for an additional 10 million display panels for which it charged up to 20% more.
