Apple's next generation iPhone SE 4 may be delayed until 2025, according to a new report from UBI Research analyst Daejeong Yoon via The Elec.

The analyst notes that production problems at BOE have made its status as a supplier for the device unclear. Previous generations of the iPhone SE have used an LCD; however, it's expected that Apple will switch to OLED for the next generation iPhone SE. As the device is an entry-level model, the OLED used would be a low-cost product.

"As BOE actively promoted flexible OLEDs, it was promising for BOE to deliver OLED for the iPhone SE4, but due to (BOE's) performance issues, the supplier is now uncertain," said Yoon Dae-jung, a researcher at the institute, adding, "The release time of OLED iPhone SE4 has also been delayed by one year from 2024 to 2025." He said, "Regarding OLED for the iPhone SE4, Samsung Display is promoting it as a rigid OLED and LG Display is promoting it as a flexible OLED," adding, "There is an observation that not only BOE, but also TCL CSOT is a candidate group recently." "There is a lot of time left before the release of the iPhone SE4, so we have to wait and see," Yoon said, adding, "iPhone SE4 shipments are expected to be 15 million ~ 20 million units."

Notably, last month Samsung filed a patent infringement lawsuit against BOE. The complaint alleges that BOE used its diamond subpixel array structure patent in displays supplied to Apple for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
