Samsung will start manufacturing OLED panels for the iPhone 15 in May, a month earlier than planned, reports The Elec. Sources tell the site that this is because BOE is struggling to make panels for the standard iPhone 15 model.
The OLED panel being planned for the standard model of iPhone 15 is similar to those used in iPhone 14 but now it has a hole at the top for the front camera and various sensors. BOE is facing light leak problems around the hole and has missed the chance become one of the initial suppliers of the hole-display panels.
In a standard LCD, light leak happens when light from the backlight is not properly covered by the panel. However, in a hole-display, the light can leak directly from the hole when areas within are not covered correctly.
Samsung had already landed orders for the standard iPhone 15; however, an earlier start to production will allow it to make up for the shortfall caused by BOE. Additionally, both Samsung and LG are scheduled to start production of iPhone 15 Pro panels in June.
While BOE is out as an earlier supplier, sources believe the company will eventually resolve its production issues and be added back as a supplier within in the year.
The Elec notes that the standard iPhone 15 models will use low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT), while Pro models will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT.
Apple will likely unveil the iPhone 15 lineup at a press event in September. Check out some of the rumored features here and please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more updates.
