iPhone 15 Proximity Sensor to be Situated Within Dynamic Island [Kuo]

Apple is planning to move the proximity sensor on the iPhone 15 to be situated within the dynamic island, according to a new report from TF International Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo.

In a post on Twitter, Kuo says this change will result in IQE replacing Landmark as the supplier of epi-wafer for proximity sensors for the new iPhone.

IQE is set to replace Landmark as the exclusive supplier of epi-wafer for proximity sensors in the iPhone 15 series. While all iPhone 15 models adopt a similar Dynamic Island design as the iPhone 14 Pro, the difference lies in the placement of the proximity sensor. In the iPhone 14 Pro, the proximity sensor is located under the display (outside the dynamic island). Conversely, in the iPhone 15 series, the proximity sensor is situated within the dynamic island, with almost no change to the Dynamic Island area.

The change will also have Finisar supplying 940nm wavelength proximity sensors for the iPhone 15.

Due to this change, Finisar (acquired by Coherent/II-VI) will shift to offering 940nm wavelength proximity sensors (compared to 1380nm for the iPhone 14 Pro), and the upstream epi-wafer supplier will transition to IQE.

Notably, this report has been corroborated by leaker @URedditor on Twitter.

"This is true for both the standard 15 as well as the 15 Pro - the proximity sensor is part of the Single Pearl Module, codename Sphinx. Didn't think anyone would care about this info so I never bothered releasing it."

The leaker also notes that Pearl = Face ID, so this could lead to some improvements for Face ID.
