Apple to Limit Data and Charging Speeds for USB-C iPhone Accessories Without MFi Certification

Apple is planning to limit data and charging speeds for USB-C iPhone accessories that do not have MFi certification, according to a new report from leaker ShrimpApplePro.

Yeah usb-c with MFI is happening
Foxconn already in mass production accessories like EarPods and cables

Cables w no MFI will be software limited in data and charging speed

Notably, this report aligns with a recent leak on Weibo from a user claiming to have worked for twenty five years in the integrated circuit design industry.

Apple's MFi (Made for iPhone) program, is a licensing program for developers of hardware and software peripherals. To get access to certain protocols, manufacturers need to join the program and pass certification tests.

Join the MFi Program and get the technical specifications, hardware components, certification tools, and badge artwork needed to develop and manufacture electronic accessories that connect to Apple products using licensed technologies. Companies and organizations are eligible to apply.

While unfortunate, it was always unlikely that Apple would shut down the MFi program when making the forced switch to USB-C from Lightning.

This is welcome news. MFi is open to anyone to apply so those who don’t aren’t offering a quality product. This will help to protect consumers from junk cables.
