Apple has plans to increase India's share of its total production to 25%, up from 5-7%, according to the country's trade minister Piyush Goyal, via Reuters.
At the B20 India Inception Meeting in Gujarat today, Goyal pitched India as a competitive manufacturing destination.
"Apple, another success story," Piyush Goyal said. "They are already at about 5-7% of their manufacturing in India. If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25% of their manufacturing. They launched the most recent models from India, manufactured in India."
Goyal didn't specific the timeframe being targeted by Apple; however, the company has recently ramped up efforts to realize production capacity outside China. Apple first began assembly iPhones in India via Wistron in 2017. Now, Foxconn is also assembling iPhones in India and has plans to quadruple the workforce at its iPhone factory over the next two years.
Notably, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Indian's electronics and information technology minister, tweeted on Monday that Apple had exported $1 billion worth of Made in India iPhones this past December.
Made in India iPhone, does $1 billion exports in Dec.
Apple is also said to have overtaken Samsung in mobile exports from India in November 2022.
