Even with performance aside, the MacBook Pro 16 is far ahead of most Windows laptops in areas like screen quality, audio, touchpad size, and build. And there are just so many compromises that today's Windows workstations ask when it comes to battery life, efficiency, noise, and heat — and if you can get your hands on one of these 16-inch MacBooks, you just don't have to worry about any of them anymore.

It's a reaffirmation of the "Pro" in MacBook Pro: chunky, heavy, blazingly fast, full of ports and packed with the best the company has to offer. And they're decidedly not for everyone — not even most. I'm still going to recommend the Air for nine out of 10 people (if not more) who ask me which MacBook to buy in the coming year. If you're that 10th person, you almost certainly already know.

Unless you need every little speed increase you can get, you needn't feel the FOMO if you've got the last-generation MacBook Pro 16. But if you didn't jump onto the Apple Silicon bandwagon last go-round and don't rely on any applications that will only run on the Intel processors, it's probably smart to consider the upgrade this time around. As for more specific recommendations, that will require more specific testing. Stay tuned.

If this review seems short, that's because there's not too much to talk about; this is essentially the 2021 MacBook Pro but 20–30 percent faster at some tasks, and with a few connectivity options upgraded to better match what is expected from a pricey laptop like this. And that's OK because the 2021 MacBook Pro was excellent. The 2023 version is the same but slightly better. The M2 Pro and M2 Max's performance and efficiency make them attractive devices for many people.

So is the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 right for you? If you want something that's portable but very powerful I would say yes, if you're willing to spend at least $1,999. It's certainly a lot faster than the MacBook Pro 13-inch with M2, but that model starts at $1,299 while lasting roughly 4 more hours on a charge. Then there's the MacBook Pro 16-inch, which starts at $2,499; that system is worth getting if you really want a bigger screen and a design with a bit more thermal headroom for sustained performance, but it offers the same specs overall. I wouldn't say that the MacBook Pro 14-inch 2023 is fast enough to warrant an upgrade from the M1 Pro model, but if you're looking to step up from an older system it is the pinnacle of performance.
