Apple has fallen off the Glassdoor's list of the top one hundred Best Places to Work for 2023. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has also dropped off the list.
Glassdoor announced the winners of its 15th annual Employees' Choice Awards this week, honoring the best places to work in 2023. During the year-long eligibility period, employers considered for the large list must have received at least 75 ratings and employers considered for the small & medium list must have received at least 30 ratings, respectively, for each of the nine workplace attributes (overall company rating, career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, diversity and inclusion, senior management, work-life balance, recommend to a friend and six-month business outlook) taken into account as part of the awards algorithm.
Last year, Apple placed #56, down from #31 in 2021. Meta placed #47 in 2022, down from #11 in 2021.
"Apple has been on the list for the last 15 years, since the list's inception," Daniel Zhao, a lead economist at Glassdoor, tells CNBC. "And then Meta has been on the list since 2011, and it's actually been number one in the past … That's not to say that Meta and Apple are bad places to work, they just have fallen a little bit given how competitive the list is this year."
Zhao notes that Apple's requirement that workers come to work may have affected their scores.
"In the last year for Apple, the return to office push has been met with mixed responses from employees. And then for Meta, they are undergoing a significant strategic shift. And we do see from employee reviews that employees are still unsure about how that is going to play out."
The top ten Best Places to Work 2023 are:

The top five Best Small & Medium Companies to Work 2023 are:
1. Goodwin Recruiting (4.7 rating out of 5)
2. Telemynd (4.7)
3. J.J. Taylor (4.6)
4. Pariveda (4.6)
5. Ironclad (4.6)
Thirty-seven employers are newcomers to the 100 Best Places to Work 2023, including the LEGO Group (No. 21, 4.5), Spotify (No. 90, 4.4) and Toast Inc. (No. 96, 4.4). Twenty-one employers absent from the 2022 list are rejoining in 2023, including Netflix (No. 40, 4.5; last recognized in 2009), Mastercard (No. 60, 4.4; last recognized in 2021), MD Anderson Cancer Center (No. 71, 4.4; last recognized in 2021) and Electronic Arts (No. 97, 4.4; last recognized in 2018). Only two employers have made the list every year for the past 15 years: Bain & Company (No. 3, 4.6) and Google (No. 8, 4.6).
