Apple's much rumored mixed reality headset may finally be set for unveiling this spring, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
After seven years of development and many delays, the AR/VR headset will purportedly be unveiled ahead of WWDC 2023.
Up until fairly recently, Apple had aimed to introduce the headset in January 2023 and ship it later this year. Now the company is aiming to unveil it this spring ahead of the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June, I'm told.
Select developers have already been given access to the device which runs an operating system internally dubbed "Borealis". When released, the OS will likely be named 'xrOS'.
Gurman expects Apple to name the headset 'Reality Pro'. Developers will be given more information about its software features at WWDC 2023 in June and the product will ship to customers in fall 2023.
Notably, Apple has brought in resources from a variety of departments to make this year's launch happen, potentially hampering other projects.
To make that happen, Apple roped in resources from several hardware and software engineering departments. That's hampered other projects, some of which were already suffering from their own delays and budget cuts stemming from the economic slowdown. And it could mean Apple has fewer major breakthroughs to show off this year.
Despite its delays, Apple's headset does appear to be moving towards launch. A recent report revealed numerous new details about the device including that it will allegedly feature a waist mounted battery, a digital crown, an H2 chip, and much more.
