Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will relaunch its $8/month Verified accounts feature with multiple colored checkmarks and manual authentication.
There will now be three different colored checkmark icons. A gold check for companies, a gray check for government, and a blue check for individuals.
Musk notes that manually authenticating accounts will be "painful, but necessary."

Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week.
Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates.
Painful, but necessary.
-----
Elaborating, Musk said that "all verified individual humans will have same blue check, as boundary of what constitutes “notable” is otherwise too subjective." Individuals can have a secondary tiny logo showing that they belong to an organization, if verified as such by that organization.
A longer explanation will be provided to users next week. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.
