TSMC is planning to produce advanced chips using its 3nm process at a new plant in Arizona, reports Reuters. The company's founder Morris Chang revealed the plan on Monday but said it has yet to be finalized.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that TSMC was working on a second multibillion dollar factory in Arizona. The second plant will be located north of Phoenix, next to a $12 billion plant TSMC committed to building in 2020.
Chang told reporters in Taipei that this new plant will be the 3nm plant, while the first plant will be 5nm.
"Three-nanometre, TSMC right now has a plan, but it has not been completely finalised," said Chang. "It has almost been finalised - in the same Arizona site, phase two. Five-nanometre is phase one, 3-nanometre is phase two."
Notably, Apple CEO Tim Cook recently disclosed to employees that the company would source chips from a factory in Arizona starting in 2024.
“We’ve already made a decision to be buying out of a plant in Arizona, and this plant in Arizona starts up in ’24, so we’ve got about two years ahead of us on that one, maybe a little less,” Cook told the employees. “And in Europe, I’m sure that we will also source from Europe as those plans become more apparent.”
TSMC currently manufactures the A-series and M-series chips found in the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
