Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed that the company plans to source some chips from a factory in Arizona starting in 2024.
According to Bloomberg, Cook made the disclosure during an internal meeting in Germany with local engineering and retail employees. He also said Apple may expand its supply of chips from plants in Europe.
“We’ve already made a decision to be buying out of a plant in Arizona, and this plant in Arizona starts up in ’24, so we’ve got about two years ahead of us on that one, maybe a little less,” Cook told the employees. “And in Europe, I’m sure that we will also source from Europe as those plans become more apparent.”
It's likely that Cook is referring to a $12 billion plant being built in Arizona by TSMC. That plant is expected to begin chip production in 2024. Additionally, TSMC has already started building a second multibillion dollar factory in Arizona that could be used for advanced chip production.
This summer, the US passed the Chips and Science Act that provides around $50 billion in incentives to bring chip manufacturing back to America. Cooks says the Act and similar efforts in Europe will reshape the chip industry.
“I think you will wind up seeing a significant investment in capability and capacity in both the United States and Europe to try to reorient the market share of where silicon is produced.”
