Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is planning to build a second multibillion dollar factory in Arizona, reports the WSJ.

The second plant will be located north of Phoenix, next to a $12 billion plant TSMC committed to building in 2020. Washington has provided lucrative grants to entice the company to bring advanced manufacturing back to America, and it's believed that the new plant could be used to make 3nm transistors.

TSMC said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal Wednesday that it is constructing a building to potentially serve as a second fab at its site in Arizona. It will consider adding more advanced chip capacity there, though it hasn’t made a final decision, the statement said.

TSMC plans to hold a ceremony in December to install the first batch of production equipment in its first plant that is now nearing completion. When it started building the plant, the company expected to produce 5nm chips there. Sources say it may now make some 4nm chips at the facility as well; however, production is not expected to start until 2024.

Apple contracts TSMC to manufacturer the A-series and M-series chips found in iPhones, iPads, and Macs. If TSMC does start to make 3nm chips in America, some of those chips could end up in Apple products.
