Apple plans to further distinguish between its regular and 'Pro' series of smartphones with the launch of the iPhone 15, according to a new report from TrendForce.
Analyst Mia Huang notes that new features and the delayed launch of the iPhone 14 Plus has made the iPhone 14 Pro more popular than expected. Consequently, Apple increased the production ratio of the iPhone 14 Pro to 60% from 50%. Huang says this ratio could continue to rise to 65% in the future. Overall, new iPhone model shipments are expected to remain at 36% in 2022 and total shipments are targeted at 240 million units, an annual increase of 2.8%.
TrendForce expects Apple to feel the effects of the current economy in 1Q23, with production lowering to 52 million units from an earlier estimate of 56 million units. That's a 14% year over year decline.
Looking to the iPhone 15, TrendForce believes Apple will offer four new models - two high-end and two standard. All four will likely make the switch to USB-C from Lightning as demanded by the European Union. The Pro model is expected to get a faster processor, 8GB of RAM, and an 8P (eight plastic lenses) main camera. The Pro Max model will allegedly feature a periscope lens for better optical zoom. Finally, Apple will purportedly stick with Qualcomm for the 5G modem on the iPhone 15, moving to its own modem in 2024.
