Brazil has ordered Apple to stop selling iPhone models that ship without a charger, reports Reuters.
The country's Justice Ministry found that Apple was providing an incomplete product to customers and fined the company 12.275 million reais ($2.38 million). Additionally, it ordered Apple to stop selling iPhone 12 and newer models, in addition to suspending sale of any model that does not come with a charger.
In the order, published in the country's official gazette, the ministry argued that the iPhone was lacking a[n] essential component in a "deliberate discriminatory practice against consumers". The authorities rejected Apple's argument that the practice had the purpose of reducing carbon emissions saying that there is no evidence of environmental protection from selling the smartphone without a charger.
As expected, Apple plans to appeal the decision.
“At Apple, we consider our impact on people and the planet in everything we do. Power adapters accounted for our biggest use of zinc and plastic, and taking them out of the box helped reduce more than 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of removing 500,000 cars from the road a year. There are billions of USB-A power adapters already in use around the world that our customers can use to charge and connect their devices. We have already won several court rulings in Brazil on this matter and We are confident that our customers are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices. We will continue to work with Senacon to resolve their concerns and we plan to appeal this decision."
