Apple has surpassed Android to account for over 50% of smartphones used in the United States, reports Counterpoint Research via the Financial Times.

The iPhone is said to have crossed the 50% landmark last quarter. While only a handful of iOS devices make up this segment, there are over 150 Android devices, led by Samsung and Lenovo, accounting for the rest.

"Operating systems are like religions — never significant changes. But over the past four years the flow has consistently been Android to iOS," said Counterpoint’s research director, Jeff Fieldhack. "This is a big milestone that we could see replicated in other affluent countries across the globe."

CCS analyst Ben Wood said, "It's not that we are seeing a big year where Apple grows its market share 10 or 15 per cent, but there’s this slow burn where they quietly just grab more share every year."

Apple's upcoming iPhone 14 announcement is likely to help boost market share even higher. The company is set to unveil its new iPhone 14, 'iPhone 14 Plus', iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max at an upcoming 'Far Out' special event on September 7.
