Apple is planning to release a 'rugged' version of the Apple Watch that has a larger display, reports Bloomberg. The watch will purportedly be geared towards extreme sports athletes.

The rugged version of the Apple Watch will get a screen that measures almost 2 inches diagonally, while a new, standard Apple Watch Series 8 will keep the 1.9-inch diagonal screen size of the current Apple Watch Series 7. A planned update to the low-end Apple Watch SE also will retain the current screen size.

The new display will have about 7% more screen area than the 45mm Apple Watch Series 7 with a resolution of 410x502 pixels. Notably, this size lines up with the recent prediction of a 1.99-inch display from Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young.

It's said that the rugged Apple Watch will a use a stronger metal material than aluminum, have a more shatter resistant cover glass, and utilize a larger battery. This will let athletes track workouts for longer than the regular model.

The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to feature an S8 processor with similar performance to the S7 chip, body temperature detection, and improved tracking metrics for swimming and hiking.

Finally, the rugged edition is expected to cost more than the stainless steel Apple Watch which currently starts at $699.

Apple will likely unveil the Apple Watch Series 8 alongside its new iPhone 14 this fall. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.
