Base Model M2 13-inch MacBook Pro Has Significantly Slower SSD Speeds Than M1 Model [Video]

The base model M2 13-inch MacBook Pro has significantly slower SSD speeds than the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro and M2 models with more storage, notes Max Tech.

In a video comparing the new 13-inch MacBook Pro to the previous generation, Max Tech notes that the 256GB M2 model benchmarks at 1446 MB/s read and 1463 MB/s write. Compare that to the M1 MacBook Pro at 2900 MB/s read and 2215 MB/s write.

The difference is easily explained by Apple's use of a single 256GB NAND chip for the M2 model versus two 128GB NAND chips for the M1 model.

Notably, if you purchase an M2 model with more than 256GB of storage, Apple is using two NAND chips, so you'll get the higher read/write speeds.

It remains to be seen if the same issue will present itself in the new MacBook Air.
