Apple is increasing its starting pay for hourly workers in the U.S. to $22/hour or higher, a 45% increase from 2018, according to the WSJ. The company revealed the increase in an email to employees on Wednesday. Starting salaries are also expected to increase.

“Supporting and retaining the best team members in the world enables us to deliver the best, most innovative, products and services for our customers,” an Apple spokesman said in a statement. “This year as part of our annual performance review process, we’re increasing our overall compensation budget.”

Additionally, some workers have been told their annual reviews will be moved up three months and their pay increases will take effect in early July. Those workers were told that Apple's increased compensation budget is in addition to pay increases and awards already received within the past year.

The move comes as Apple competes for talent and tries to prevent employee efforts to unionize at multiple retail store locations. In a recently leaked video, Senior Vice President of Retail + People Deirdre O'Brien tells workers that the company will be slower to respond to their concerns if a union is formed. Apple is also accused of violating federal labor laws by interrogating workers about union activity, prohibiting employees from posting union flyers in shared spaces, and forcing workers to attend anti-union presentations.
