Apple has caught BOE cheating on production of OLED panels for the iPhone 13 which could result in the company losing orders for the iPhone 14, according to a new report from TheElec.
The company was caught having changed the circuit width of the thin film transistors on the OLED panels it made for iPhone 13 earlier this year, people familiar with the matter said. This was done without Apple’s approval in a likely bid to increase the yield rate, they said. BOE could not receive any orders from Cupertino for OLED panels on the iPhone 14 series because of this, they added.
Following the incident, BOE reportedly sent a C-level executive and employees to Apple headquarters to explain why the design was changed. At the same time, they purportedly asked Apple to approve orders for the iPhone 14's OLED panels but did not receive a clear response.
TheElec believes Apple could be poised to give the 30 million unit order to Samsung Display and LG Display instead. Samsung Display is already expected to manufacture 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch panels for the iPhone 14 Pro models, while LG Display is expected to supply panels for the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.
