Apple has previewed its upcoming mixed reality headset for the company's board of directors, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The move suggests the headset has reached an advanced stage of development.
Sources tell the site that the headset was shown to the board last week. Additionally, the company has purportedly ramped up development of its reality operating system.
In recent weeks, Apple has also ramped up development of rOS -- short for reality operating system -- the software that will run on the headset, according to other people familiar with the work. That progress, coupled with the board presentation, suggests that the product’s debut could potentially come within the next several months.
Codenamed N301, the headset has been in development since about 2015. The project is spearheaded by Mike Rockwell and is also overseen by Dan Riccio. There are an estimated 2,000 employees working on the device as part of a team called the Technology Development Group (TDG).
If released, the headset would be Apple's first major new product category entrance since the Apple Watch in 2015. It's looking increasingly possible that the company could unveil the headset as early as this year. Initially, Apple targeted WWDC 2022 but overheating issues reportedly delayed that goal.
In addition to the AR/VR headset, Apple is also working on stand-alone AR glasses, codenamed N421. Those will overlay digital information and images on top of the real world but are expected to launch later this decade.
Apple's mixed reality headset is thought to cost upwards of $2000 and feature a powerful M-series chip. Display Supply Chain Consultants predicts it will offer an innovative display configuration using two Micro OLED displays and one AMOLED panel.
