LG Display is evaluating various methods of the deposition process for its Gen 8.5 OLED panels, which it aims to supply to Apple for the company's first OLED MacBook, reports TheElec.
Currently, LG uses etching fine metal masks to depositing red, green, and blue organic materials for its Gen 6 (1500x1850mm) OLED panels . Although these Gen 6 panels are likely to be used for future OLED iPads, the company hopes to provide Gen 8.5 OLED panels for the first OLED MacBook, expected to launch in 2025.
The South Korean display panel maker is planning to use its Gen 6 OLED lines for the two OLED sporting iPads (12.9-inch and 11-inch) that are expected to debut earlier than the OLED MacBook. As OLED panels that will be used on MacBooks and iPads launching later than the first two OLED tablets will be larger, it is more economically advantageous for LG Display to use larger substrates such as Gen 8.5 as more of the panels can be cut out them per substrate while taking less time.
It's expected to take LG about a year to evaluate the deposition process. Notably, Samsung has also begun evaluation for Gen 8.5 OLED deposition and is likely to be the first company to commercialize Gen 8.5 OLED panels.
While, we don't expect an OLED MacBook Pro until 2025, Apple did just introduce significant display improvements with its mini-LED 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Currently, the 14-inch model is on sale for $250 off, bringing it down to its lowest price ever.
