Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the company's car team needs to reorganize soon if it plans to reach mass production by 2025.
In a tweet today, Kuo said:
The Apple Car project team has been dissolved for some time. The reorganization within the next three to six months is necessary to achieve the goal of mass production by 2025.
Apple's seven year car project has encountered frequent turnover and strategy shifts. In December, several key departures followed the loss of at least six other members of its management team including former head Doug Field.
That being said, the project's new leader, VP of Technology Kevin Lynch, has been accelerating the effort, pushing for a fully autonomous car in its first version.
It's believed that Apple's ideal car would be designed around hands-off driving with no steering wheel and no pedals. Passengers would sit along the sides of the vehicle and face each other, like a limo. The company has purportedly reached key milestones in developing its self-driving system. Much of the core work on the vehicle's initial processor has been finished, including work on the underlying software that runs on the chip to power self-driving capabilities.
Foxconn and Luxshare are already angling for orders; however, analysts believe that Apple could still with more experienced car manufacturers for initial runs.
