Apple will release a new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with next generation M2 chips this year, according to a new report from 9to5Mac.
Reliable sources tell the site that Apple plans to launch a new MacBook Air codenamed J413. The notebook will feature an M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, same as the rumored new Mac mini.
Additionally, Apple is also expected to update the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 chip. That notebook, codenamed J493, will purportedly keep the same design as the current model. Internally, Apple has considered dropping the 'Pro' name from this notebook, calling it just 'MacBook'. This would let the company could rebrand the notebook as an entry-level offering.
It's unclear when Apple is planning to release these new MacBooks; however, sources say they are in advanced stages of development. We'd expect some time later this year. Perhaps in time for back to school or the holidays.
Notably, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has directly contradicted reports of an M2 MacBook Air, predicting instead that the new netbook will still use an M1 chip.
