Only iPhone 14 Pro Models Will Get 'Pill + Hole' Cutouts [Report]

Apple is planning to replace the notch with new 'pill + hole' cutouts but only the 'iPhone 14 Pro' models will get the refreshed design this year, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants. The iPhone 14 will purportedly stick with the usual notch.

For the 2022 iPhones 14 and 14 Max, we expect to see the smaller notch from the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini. For the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Max, as we previously indicated, we expect to see the notch replaced with a pill shaped hole for the Face ID elements and another hole for the selfie camera. This will be another instantly recognizable display shape for Apple.

Notably, the 2023 iPhone 15 series is expected to adopt the 'pill + hole' design across all models. It's also suggested that the cutouts could get slightly smaller.

In 2023, we believe all four models will have the pill + hole design. Perhaps the pill and holes may get smaller in 2023, some leakers on Twitter have already claimed that the hole has a large diameter of 5.631mm citing this image from Weibo, larger than the Galaxy S10 from 2019, so it would not be a surprise to potentially see it reduced in 2023.

Apple is said to be working on under panel Face ID which would allow it to get rid of the pill shaped hole. This requires a new design for the display panel, replacing the Yb/MgAg cathode on top of the OLED stack. One solution that involves patterning the cathode materials has allegedly been qualified for mass production; however, sources say the new panel likely won't be ready for 2023.
