Foxconn and Luxshare Look to Land Orders for Apple Car

iPhone assemblers Foxconn and Luxshare Precision are looking to land orders for the rumored Apple Car, according to a DigiTimes report.

Both companies have expanded into the vehicle industry in advance of Apple's autonomous vehicle. However, it's believed that Apple could choose to partner with a more experienced company to start.

According to the sources, some analysts have argued that Foxconn would not be likely to become the leading manufacturer of the Apple Car, as they believe South Korea-based Hyundai Motor and Canada-based Magna International, both of which have been in partnership talks with Apple, hold advantages over Foxconn when it comes to car manufacturing. The sources said Foxconn could still build up its presence in the Apple Car supply chain by gradually accumulating car-making experience and leveraging its MIH platform, electronic components products, and experience from previous collaborations with automakers (including Stellantis and Fisker).

In China, Apple would likely need to have most manufacturing done by China-based ODMs. For example, LG, SK, and Samsung could supply EV batteries for Apple Cars sold in the U.S., but Apple might look to CATL and BYD to supply batteries for Apple Cars sold in China.

Although Luxshare recently reached an agreement with Chery Automobile to build electric vehicles (EVs), it will face strong competition from China-based automakers and other suppliers who are expanding into car manufacturing.

It's said that Apple has an ambitious timeline of 2025 for Apple Car; however, it's unclear if it is on schedule to make that target.
