These are instructions on how to find the IP Address of your iPhone. You may need to do this for networking purposes.

Watch the video below or continue on for the text tutorial...

Step One

Tap to launch Settings from your SpringBoard.

Step Two

Tap Wi-Fi from the Settings menu.

Step Three

Tap the Information (i) icon to right of a connected wireless network. This will reveal your IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings.

What is an IP address?

IP address stands for Internet protocol address. It's a string of numbers that identifies devices on the Internet. Similar to a mailbox address, an internet protocol address is needed to facilitate the sharing of information from one device to another. For example, if you Google "What is my iPhone's IP Address", a request is sent to Google's servers. Google will then search through its database, hopefully find this article, then send it back to you, using your IP address to find you.

An IP address consists of four numbers, separated by dots. Each of the four numbers is between one and three digits and falls between 0 and 255. (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).

Types of IP addresses

There are four main types of IP addresses: Public, Private, Static, and Dynamic.

Public IP Addresses

In a home situation, a public IP address is the IP address assigned to your home's network by your Internet Service Provider. This IP is configured in your router's network settings and can be either static or dynamic.

A public IP address is used to identify your entire private network. This means that any device browsing from behind the router is seen as having the same public ip address.

Private IP Addresses

A private IP address is assigned to each device on your LAN (local area network). Each device in your home network will have a different ip address, including your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Printer, and any other connected device. No two devices should have the same ip address. A private ip address can be static or dynamic.

Following the steps above to find your IP address reveals your private IP address, not your public IP address.

Dynamic IP address

Dynamic IP addresses keep changing. They are assigned when your device or router connects to the network from a pool of available addresses. There's no guarantee that you'll get the same address the next time you connect. Most of the time your iPhone's IP address will be dynamically assigned. When you connect to your Wi-Fi network, your router assigns your iPhone a private IP address. When your router connects to your Internet service provider it is usually assigned a dynamic address as well.

Static IP Addresses

A static IP address is an IP address that does not change. To get a public static IP address, you'll likely need to pay an additional fee to your Internet service provider. However, it's relatively easy to have your router reserve a static private ip address for specific devices on your Wi-Fi network. A unique address that doesn't change makes it easier to communicate with other devices when networking. However, if you do this, be careful not to set up two devices with the same ip address.
