The Microsoft Edge web browser may soon overtake Apple Safari as the second most popular desktop browser, notes TechRadar.
According to data from StatCounter, Microsoft Edge was used by 9.54% of desktop users in January 2022. That's just under Apple Safari at 9.84%. Google Chrome is way ahead at 65.38%.
Edge has been increasing in popularity over the past year. In January 2020, it was at 7.81%, compared to Safari at 10.38%. That means it's closed the gap from 2.57% to just 0.3% in one year.
The desktop browser has already surpassed Safari in Europe and Asia but has yet to do so in North America where Safari is still ~6% ahead.
Considering Edge supports Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops, we expect it will continue to gain marketshare this year. It's unclear if the browser will challenge Chrome which has dominated the browser wars since surpassing IE in 2012.
