Apple is developing new modules and chips for its autonomous vehicle with a South Korean outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) company, reports TheElec. The project began last year and will likely be completed in 2023.

The South Korean OSAT firm was working on the module for a chip that operates the autopilot function, much like those used by Tesla, sources said. Such chips, which oversee AI computations, usually integrate a neural processing unit, CPU, GPU, memory as well as camera interface among other functions.

Sources say Apple is taking a similar route to Tesla, who when developing its autopilot chip, used Samsung memory and gave assembly work to JCET STATSChipPAC Korea.

The site also notes that Foxconn is reportedly planning to build a dedicated assembly line in Thailand for the Apple Car. Recent reports have suggested the car could enter production as early as 2025; however, the timeline is fluid.
