ProMotion Display Predicted to Remain Exclusive to iPhone 14 Pro Models

Despite some earlier reports, display analyst Ross Young predicts that only the iPhone 14 Pro models will feature displays with support for a 120Hz refresh rate.

Following a tweet that revealed a new 'hole+pill' cutout design for the front display panel, Young was asked if he expects any non-Pro iPhone 14 models to get a 120Hz ProMotion display this year.

He replied,


"No since BOE doesn’t have enough LTPO capacity and have yet to ship any LTPO panels. Would be quite risky. Maybe in 2023..."

According to an Apple developer document, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max ProMotion displays can present content on the display using twelve different refresh rates. Core Animation arbitrates all the animations it presents on the screen and determines the refresh rate at any particular time. However, an app can provide hints to Core Animation about what refresh rates the app prefers for its animations. This results in smoother animations and scrolling.
