Apple has purportedly cancelled development of a new 10.86-inch OLED display for iPad, according to new report from The Elec.
Apple was working with Samsung on the new OLED display and had planned to launch the iPad as early as 2022.
The project was stopped due to either the single stack structure of OLED panel or profitability issues or both, people familiar with the matter said. Single stack refers to the current widely used OLED panel structure where red, green and blue form one emission layer. Apple had requested a two stack tandem structure instead for the OLED panel it wanted to use on its iPad. The structure stacks two red, green and blue emission layers instead of just one. This doubles the brightness and extends the panel’s life by up to four times.
Samsung purportedly purposed a single stack structure but Apple insisted on the two stack structure. The 10.86-inch panel would have used low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) which differs from the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) that Apple allegedly wants to use for its 2023-2024 OLED 12.9-inch iPad. According to the report, the 10.86-inch OLED display would have been costly for Samsung to produce, especially if it would have had to change its lines to LTPO in a year or two.
