Apple has purportedly been testing new Face ID hardware that could arrive on the iPhone 13 with a variety of masks and glasses.

Leaker Jon Prosser reports that employees are using a case that adds the new sensor array to the iPhone 12...

Apple has developed a prototype case that fits around iPhone 12 that they are using to test a new Face ID array. The case fits snug around the phone, with a very visible extra sensor array sitting above the device. This prototype case allows the iPhone 12 to bypass the regular Face ID array, in favor of using the new hardware within the case. By our measurements, the prototype array matches the same layout that we saw in the iPhone 13 CAD files that we made public back in June.

It's speculated that the sensor array being tested is the same one that will ship with the iPhone 13. The array is narrower than the one on the iPhone 12 and the camera has been shifted to the left side.

Employees have been asked to wear both masks and glasses to test the new hardware. Tests are to be performed indoor and outdoor with various types of masks and glasses.

Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone 13 in September. Unsubstantiated rumors have September 17th as the date of release. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for updates.
