Qualcomm Says It Can Best Apple Silicon Chips With Help From Ex-Apple Chip Architects

Qualcomm says it will soon produce new chips for laptops that can best Apple Silicon with help from chip architects that formerly worked for the Cupertino company.

Chief Executive Cristiano Amon told Reuters that by next year the company plans to launch a chip for laptop makers trying to compete with the Apple M1 processor.

Longtime processor suppliers Intel Corp and Advanced Micro Devices have no chips as energy efficient as Apple’s. Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon told Reuters on Thursday he believes his company can have the best chip on the market, with help from a team of chip architects who formerly worked on the Apple chip but now work at Qualcomm.

Amon recently led the $1.4 billion acquisition of Nuvia, a company founded by ex-Apple employees who helped design Apple's processors. Qualcomm will start selling Nuvia-based laptop chips next year.

Notably, Apple has sued Nuvia CEO Gerard Williams who was a Senior Director at Apple and Chief CPU Architect for nearly a decade. Apple claims Williams was forbidden from planning or engaging in business activities that are "competitive with or directly related to Apple's business or products." Williams and Nuvia have countersued arguing that "Apple’s complaint wrongly tries to suffocate the creation of new technologies and solutions by a new business, and to diminish the freedom of entrepreneurs to seek out more fulfilling work".

Riiight. Another attempt of desperately being better than the mastermind that has consistently made the fastest products. Even if they didn’t, I doubt a few extra milliseconds will make a difference.
