Apple Working On New iPad Pro With Glass Back for Wireless Charging

Apple is working on a new iPad Pro that features a glass back to enable wireless charging, according to a new report from Bloomberg. Currently, the iPad Pro uses an aluminum enclosure.

Wireless charging replaces the usual power cable with an inductive mat, which makes it easier for users to top up their device’s battery. It has grown into a common feature in smartphones but is a rarity among tablets. Apple added wireless charging to iPhones in 2017 and last year updated it with a magnet-based MagSafe system that ensured more consistent charging speeds.

Apple is reportedly testing a MagSafe system for charging the iPad Pro, similar to the one found on the iPhone 12.

Additionally, the company is testing reversing wireless charging which would let users charge their phone and other devices by laying them on the back of the iPad. There have been rumors that Apple is working on introducing this capability to iPhone as well.

Finally, Apple continues to explore development of a wireless charger that works similar to its failed AirPower charging mat. It's also investigating alternative wireless charging methods that work over greater distances.
