A Chinese engineer has managed to upgrade the RAM and storage on a new M1 MacBook Air, according to a report from qq.com.
Previously, upgrading memory and storage could only be done through Apple’s official website, and at least a price of 1500+ was required. Although consumers complained, there is no other way to upgrade. But recently, the charging head network learned that the domestic team has successfully cracked the M1 chip. It is now possible to upgrade memory and hard drives through unofficial channels, and this result comes from Yang Changshun maintenance training engineer in Guangzhou, China.
Of course this upgrade isn't something that most users will be able to perform themselves. It likely requires specialized soldering equipment and a good amount of skill. However, it's possible that one day you could pay a repair shop to do the upgrade for you, though you will be voiding your warranty and there is a risk that the entire board could get damaged.
The MacBook Air was purportedly upgraded from 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, with macOS recognizing the new memory and storage.
For now, we recommend that you select the largest amount of RAM and storage you can afford when purchasing a new Mac.
